The passing of Doug Haynes in 2016

Great painter and friend Doug Haynes passed away on this day in 2016.

Doug lived in Edmonton and was a stalwart of the Canadian art community. He was an exemplary artist who cared much about what he did and about people. One of the most stunning shows for me in recent memory was the complete Toledo Series shown just last year at the Art Gallery of Alberta.  I had the great opportunity to work with Doug in the print studio at Keyano College in Fort McMurray. On two separate visits (totaling about ten working days), he created over 150 monotypes. He liked to tease me after that about being a “task master”. But I think he was simply showing me the enthusiasm for work that permeated his life. For several years, Doug served as the chairperson of the Department of Art and Design at the University of Alberta,
